Wake

Wake

A Poem by Kelli Wyatt

"

An ineffable pain.
It surges through your body.
Indecipherable between physical or emotional,
All that can be told is the obvious.
A face coiled up in agony.

Familiar features crowd your vision.
A gasp escapes from you,
Words lost in a howling wind.
But not a single leaf stirs.
The face dissipates,
And in your final moments, you're left to yourself.

But it's all right,
For simple words echo through your head.
"Travel well."
Close your eyes
And sleep now.

Through the darkness is the only way
To see the light.
It's the only way to see
That what you were doing all along
Was so horribly wrong.

About
I started writing free-form poetry in high school. Most of my poems have darker themes - those are the personal ones. If they have a lighter theme, chances are it was a contest prompt of some sort. .. more..
