The Masks We Wear

The Masks We Wear

A Poem by DaltonStephens

Everyone has one

Some more conspicuous than others

But noticeable or not

These masks are never talked about

Because nobody wants to be exposed like that

Nobody wants to show their true nature

Or how they are really feeling

But there’s always one person that can break through

The one you want to let through

The one who makes you put your mask in your hand and sees what nobody else has

Tears streaming down your face

With the perpetual fear of being used and thrown away, of being alone strewn across your face

The face that apologizes for its existence

because merely being is something of excruciating pain to others

the only thing they see is the person they fell in love with

imperfections and all

and they embrace it with open arms

because they know how you feel

they understand what you’re going through

they are there for you

masked or not.

Because they know the real you

And that’s something that will stay with them till the end of time

This poem is amazing. I loved it. I know what it is like to wear a mask and hid my true identity from everything. This is a great work here.
