There is a tale

There is a tale

A Poem by Kat-Marie Berti

There is a tale, ancient and old

Of a princess with hair of gold

Who dared to dream at night

Of a man who would be her knight

Years went by and no one came

To save this lonely, sad young dame

She waited all the hours of the day

Asking God why her life was this way

Her parents had left her in a high tower

With a dragon to guard her, ready to devour

No brave prince knew of her terrible fate

So she spend the rest of her days in wait

I like the lengthening of the lines as you read along. AABBCC... rhyme schemes are very hard to not fall into the whimsical, I think you avoided the trap nicely. The only trip at all was over night and knight. Even with the obvious difference in meaning it twists the tongue a bit. See if this works for you instead of the Knight line: "Of the man she'd love at first sight" I don't think it carries the same power as the knight line but in reading it works smoothly. Please understand, I am picking the fly s**t out of the pepper as it where, at best changing the line would only be a tweak to a very strong poem.

Good job.

You could try dangling your golden hair out the castle window?
Seriously, this poem reminded me of the, arranged, marriages (for the lack of a better term) that you hear about in other cultures. The dragon being the fixed up guy, to the poor maiden's chagrin. Sad ending, spending the rest of your days in waiting. That is a very sad tale indeed.

Great Job!

This is very sad but I really like your style. For a short poem, the imagery is large.... well done.

An excellent poem, and with its references to fairy tales and myths, it poses challenging questions too.

i've always loved your touch!
you fairy-tale dream-like print!
so simple and out-going!
the classic rhyme scheme is something i respect very much!
i envy you!
i do wish i can write with such simplicity!

very good write!
it gave me much pleasure!

Well I hope she's goty a hanky to wave... or a bit of tatting maybe
Prince's... typical... tcha, never around when you need one...
no doubt three all came along at once...
there is some cryptic message in this `olde` tale...
you girls still expect to be swept off your feet... though these days we blokes can't be arsed with towers...
but then were not knights...
he he, nice little tickle to this piece

ahh the sweet longing. better for her, the knight is never as shiny in person

note in the last line "spend" should be "spent"
