Great Majestic

Oh beautiful creature of the sea,

How majestic you are to me,

To swim upon the sea,

 Seeing the wonders of the deep,

Wrongfully accused you stand,

Monsters they call you,

When they them self,

Are blind,

Blind to the numbers,

100 million to less than 10

Yet do they not see you?

Stripped of your wings and sunk,

Into the darkness of the ocean,

Unable to swim, unable to breath,

Left in the dark to bleed,

They leave you like this,

For a fancy soup,

That your fins give no taste,

I am sorry you must pay the price

For our greed,

I am sorry.

Author's Note

Only a few people are killed by sharks each year with a max of 10. More people die because of car accidents than they die because of sharks.
that is true. also you have a higher chance of being killed by a coconut or a vending machine (falling on you) So basically, more people are killed every year by pop machines squishing them than sharks.


In fact over the last 5 years only an average of 3 people were killed each year by sharks with a maximum of 4 in the highest year. In contrast we are killing close to 100 million sharks per year and most of them are simply killed for their fins to make shark fin soup, a status symbol in China. Next time you go into a Chinese restaurant and you see shark fin soup on the menu remember an animal that has almost the same life span as you died for that soup and his fins were severed from his body and the body dumped over the side. Virtually all the shark attacks happened because the shark thought the victim was either a seal (in the case of a surfer think how a surfer looks from below) or there was poor visibility in shallow water. Virtually all attacks are a single bite and the shark didnt come back for more because it didnt taste like he expected. The deaths are usually due to blood loss.

i'm for one am not a fan of killing any animals... i think it is cruel, and believe that all animals killing humans only do so in self- defense... i love this poem for many reasons( mainly because it just learned a lot) to be honest i'd rather kill a person than an animal... just my opinion!!! thank you for sharing, yours truely Danielle

I love Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida, still waiting to see one. I don't think I'd ever eat one, but I saw shark fin soup prepared on the original Japanese version of Iron Chef...the judges seemed to like it *shrug*
