Adrift

Adrift

A Poem by Allen Smuckler
"

finally...

"

He came in from the dark of the monsoon of his soul

and pondered how he drifted so far from land

desecration and destruction…torment and anguish

waiting on the other side, hoping I’d find it but praying I don’t

fear, hopelessness and all that appears

statements of contracts entering the room

screaming, “not today, tormenter”

“not today”…

And so he becomes me in thought and despair

waiting for the turn, the moment of truth

until I and me combine with him and he

shuttering, tossing my food, crying inside

traffic jams in my mind due to congestion

wailing to my assailant, “not yet”,

I’m here to stay

“not quite yet”…

Finally, night becomes dawn in the recess of my heart

fluttering amongst the flowers, plants, and trees

those swaying trees of time and wonder

fate hanging on by a thumbnail and a prayer

receiving and sending love from heaven

in the form of a lightning bolt, a rainbow

believing at the end, “I’m free to be”

knowing “I’m free at last”…

This is most certainly something I can relate to. Spending most of my life living for others I'm now at a point of integration of what I want, who I want to be and letting go of the past.. A difficult journey.. but it's that rainbow at the end that I keep seeing.. the freedom of standing in your own power..your own essence and loving it for the first time... well there's nothing like it. I hope to be there soon.. Wonderful insight Allen and as always food for thought and soul..xo

Blues skies smiling at me..nothing but blue skies do I see! Love this write, well done! Moving from the storms of emtional turmoil into the light of the blue sky probably one of the hardest things a human can endeavor! Nothing is as liberating nor as uplifting as to decide within your storm that you choose to stay and fight the good fight..very nice write!

This almost reads like an experience of enlightenment.

And so he becomes me in thought and despair
waiting for the turn, the moment of truth
until I and me combine with him and he

To evolve we often have to go past self-reflection. But instead dig right into both the ugly and the beautiful that inspires us to breathe. That's how I feel when I read this remarkable poem. The picture reminds me of that "light in the tunnel"...it's always in front of us...a beacon of love waiting for us...even when everything feels dark and empty.

A powerful and beautiful poem. Description made the poem create thoughts and questions. All of us must find peace and serenity in our life. Make some kind of peace. A very good ending to the excellent poetry.

i think we all wonder how we'll feel at the end of the path...i would like to think i would welcome it as a new experience like the above. but knowing me...i'll fight it to the end.
exquisite insight here. i've always looked at something like this as being fearful, but you've given us a more peaceful view

it is difficult to stave off death when it comes for you. this person is really holding on strong. even when feeling despair. when he was finally ready he lets go and becomes free from the torment he's been experiencing til the end. this is a glimpse of what it may be like when you're so close to death. it's sad for that reason, however, becoming free from pain and fear gives it closure and relief. excellent poem.
