The Ghost of Yesterday

The Ghost of Yesterday

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield
"

About the loss we feel when those idols we hold dear pass.

"

At times I question the how and why
I lament the losses of the past
My loves, my heroes, my idols long gone
Hauntingly captured in 2-D motion
The video like a ghostly reminder of their presence

I ask myself what if...
I constantly wonder how it would be
If things had been different in that one moment
If we could have reached through time
Brought them peace, protection, cure or council
Maybe then we could all loose the sorrow in our hearts

Sometimes we forget the glories of the day
Sometimes we forget the struggles when we overcome
But we never forget that moment of loss that comes with the fallen idol
The place, the circumstance, the shock and the feeling that never leaves
When we realize that the world we knew is no more

And as the years pass and the seasons bring change
We get a little better, we cope and go on
But somewhere inside we'll always feel the loss
A simple yearning to turn back time and make the wrong right
A wish that a blink of an eye could erase the void
We look into the screen and we see their faces
For a moment we can see what we long to hope for
In our futile dreams of resurrecting the heroes of our past

I wrote this after watching some of Nirvana's Unplugged special. It just got me to thinking about all those that entertain us that left so early. We even have a macab "club" for those who parish at 27 because it was so frequent. Shannon Hoon, Kurt Kobain, Graham Parsons, Mama Cass, Jimi Hendrix, Owen Hart, Steve Corino, Brian Pillman, Elliot Smith, Silvia Plath, the list goes on of those who left us far too soon in the various entertainment fields/public eye. You remember where you were when you found out, you rember how you felt when you found out the sounds and sight you just expierenced were from a ghost of another time, you even sometimes wish you could trade someone or something else for their ressurection. While seeing those bits of the past on your TV are a nice and warm feeling, part of you still goes to that part of you that ask, what if...
