Open Eyes to Hear

Open Eyes to Hear

A Poem by Desert Dreamer
"

for Selene's Synesthesia contest

"

At sunrise

closed my eyes to see

the world of sound

Cardinal calls out "Ether Ether"

blue water appears

ripples

expands

swirls

becomes a tree of many branches

ancient bark patterns moving

"Ether Ether"

again, the rippling waters

this time condensing into a face

I see eyes staring back at me

ancient face

eyes full of wisdom

"Ether Ether"

blue waters

a single eye approaches

engulfs

surrounds

darkness

I open my eyes

At the setting of the sun

I reach out

touch the leaves

smell earthy scents

hear quiet voices

plants speak quickly

words flashing by

so many expressions

noise buzzing

like children

crying out to be heard

speaking faster and faster

louder and louder

I get dizzy

At night

open eyes to hear

stars speak

whispers

secrets spoken slowly

long drawn out syllables

humming

sacred sound

"ohm"

universe sings

when I look at the stars

My Dear Writing Friend Desert Dreamer,
Your poem was sucked into my soul like water is into parched ground. After reading your poem the first thought I had was of nine-eleven. For all the shocking and unspeakable horrible things that befell the world that day, there was for me a ray of light that few were able to hear and see. Living remote but always under the flight paths of the jumbo jet, when all were grounded for the first time ever I basked in just the sounds of nature.
I prayed when I ask the Great Mystery, “Oh Great Father was this what it was like before the invasion of society noise on your creation? Was this what my Grandfathers relished with their ears? When animal herds beyond number roamed and flocks of your winged creations, so thick the sky would be darkened by them were thriving? Was this what it was like in Deep Time? Oh Great Father thank you for the silence of society and the song of your creation.”
If one will find the quiet spots, sit with eyes closed; they will hear the sounds of Deep Time. And if they keep silent they will begin to hear a melody. They will then begin to see with their soul a vivid world so breathtaking in beauty and wonderment that time will appear to stand still. Then the answers they seek will be spoken to them. They will see with their ears and when they finally open their eyes, their eyes will be able to listen. The question becomes are they brave enough to put away the noise pollution around them and meet the creation and its voice.
An excellent poem painted with vibrant words from your soul on the canvas of ours.

Blessings, Laughing-Bear

This is a great poem - captures the beauty and magic of nature, and that overwhelming feeling we get when we're completely consumed and lost in it. I really liked this - great imagery. :)

This poem is very appealing to me, because its images, the use of the senses and juxtapositions work very well. For me this was a very natural read. You really do nature justice. You are a very good observer and a sensitive soul who succeeds in sharing her feelings with the more empathic reader.
I was asked to review this by a friend and I am very grateful that she sent this poem my way!

I came to pause my breath... and you took it softly away with gentle intent...
I remember the chants - californian and asian eves "OHHhhhmmmm" "myo ho regni kyo..." now just whispered dreams...

Nizhoni! We are one voice in our universe! You have opened your ears and spirit to hear all the other voices held in within that place. We call that living in "HOZHO"! In balance, peace, harmony with positive and pure motivations! Aho!

Such a vivid dance of words through the wonders of the world! There is the sacred beauty found in all that sings around us and above us.. What a beautiful world it would be if it was the earth and sky people treasured...
