Mom

You were always there for me

I needed you.

You are the one who picks me up when I fall,

you provide for me.

You are the one who cares,

when troubled dawned, 

you helped through my hardships.

Without you I don't know what I am.

you made me what I am,

and for that I am thankful.

Many times I have disappointed you. 

and many times I forgot to say I love you,

But this is the day that I show and say that I love you. 

I will make this day special,

and never ever forget,

to say I love you.

I love you mom,

I really do.

Wrote this for my mom for her birthday.

A piece of advice I often give other writers is "show, don't tell." In this piece, you spend a bunch of time telling the reader about your mom, but not in very strong, original, or expressive terms. If you care about your mom, why, specifically? If you look at my poem called "Thanksgiving," you'll see some examples that I used when talking about all my mom has done for me.
