Watching a Shadow

Watching a Shadow

A Poem by DrD

If you meet a man watching his shadow

Remembering when it was shared

And if he tells of wayward wonders

Of love and loss and longing

Then listen

The message will not be his alone to tell

For ‘tis the dream of countless others

I once knew love by her name, he’ll say

I knew her touch from a thousand others

Her feelings I felt, her thoughts I perceived

She defined all I ever hoped to be

Then after

She was gone as if she had never been

And somehow she took me with her

I sense the empty space beside me

Wait! Can you hear her upon the wind?

The wisp of perfume, the darting glimpse

Oh God, her fingers have coursed my cheek.

Then when

My eyes are open I see it’s only you

And I will walk away, watching my shadow

It amazes me how you can take some simple physical law of the interrupted angle of the sun, and turn it into a wistful, beautifully mesmerizing tribute that hints of shared history. I am just going to have to read and study everything you've written, because I want to be a sponge that just absorbs all your cast offs and loose bits of wisdom. Thank you for sharing, David! :)

Oh excellent again! I love the haunted memory here and how you hint at it being a shared experience, one that we would all recognize. Defining it as a shadow that wanders in and out of your waking life is really good. These possibilities and moments, fantasies that populate our inner worlds, unspoken...you have captured it well here for me.
