My Lost Love

My Lost Love

A Poem by Veronica Franco
"

This is decicated to a very sweet, talented man, and I know I love as a person.

"

When I see a glimpse of you,

My heart jumps out of my chest.

I think of what I can't have,

Emotions surge through me.

You pine for your love lost,

While my heart pines for you.

By the time your heart heals,

Fear sets in, you may fall for another.

Memories of you,

Completely wrapped around me.

Holding me, just as tight in the morning,

As you did when we fell asleep.

You may never completely comprehend,

That my heart beats for you.

How can I express to you,

That I want to be your salvation.

Great poem, I love it, we all lost our lovers, and the memories are what we have Yossi

The poem seems to be speaking of a one-sided affair at the beginning, longing for that which is unattainable. Then it makes a turn into the realm of fantasy, projecting the feelings upon the object of desire to such a point that the distinction between fantasy and reality are no longer bound by logic.

Early in the poem it seems as though the object of desire is oblivious to the fact that there is someone that is so enamored with him. Then in the third stanza there is a mention of what appears to be lovemaking:

Memories of you,
Completely wrapped around me.
Holding me, just as tight in the morning,
As you did when we fell asleep.

Then at the end, in the fourth stanza we return to the assertion that the object of desire may remain ever oblivious of the fact that there is a person that wishes to apply the balm of love to his wounded heart, to, as it says in closing:
"You may never completely comprehend,
That my heart beats for you.
How can I express to you,
That I want to be your salvation.

The dichotomy of this poem is what attracts me.
