The Night Shade

The Night Shade

A Poem by Kay

There’s a shade in your head

that rattles your eyes open at night

and presses its finger on the hours

to drag them terribly slow.

The doctor calls it ‘insomnia’,

but you know it’s more:

a large, stray demon that whispers

wild worries on a winding road.

With no end and no direction,

you’re led on into twilight,

eyes redder than dragon fire

and sanity pulling away

one misguided thread at a time,

until the shade drowns out

your concept of day

in a tangle of black weight.
