Reasons Not To Visit Dachau

Reasons Not To Visit Dachau

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

I am not that strong

"
It would be like a Cessna hitting a mountain;
Weltschmerz; rain falling on a tin roof.
So let me work my garden with burnt hands,
Thoughtless as a spade in cold loam.
Let all words fail as the day reduces;
We all love the holes in which we put our heads.

I visited Dachau in the early 70's, it was a solemn and disturbing experience.
I could use that description for your poem as well Leslie. Well done.

Powerful sentiment scripted here, I imagine it's like being at the Colosseum somewhat, I felt as though it was haunted by the horror of spirits past.

Can be true of the present day world, we pretend the world is ok. Poignant !

Thanks for the review, and best wishes.
I feel your despair in this poem. Its deep, like holes. All holes lead somewhere.

I have been trying for years to go there. It is not far, but I can`t..
Nicely done poem. Very creative.
There are just some places that can do that to us, we just can't go
there.

Yes, I do understand.
This is brilliant. Subtle. Powerful. My friend visited, I am not sure which camp it was, and really does it matter? She said, it made her stop believing in God. She read an inscription on the wall about God leaving them in that place.

These are places that take away the earth..
there are many places like this, i enter quietly, with reverence

if i can enter at all

I know I should go, but I am too much of a coward...

some of us are more sensitive to the energy that lingers, it isn't cowardice at all
Shades of Seamus Heaney in your wonderful expressive poetry Leslie. To feel the depression when we see so much angst in the world drumming on a tin roof is so expressive of the nagging feelings we all carry round with us. Such an enjoyable read and a wonderful poem.
