Piano and the Beast

Piano and the Beast

A Poem by L.M.W.

The beauty of the piano swayed in the background. She just wanted to play the piano one more time. For the last time. The familiar metallic smell filled the air, accompanying the death and grief. She paid no attention to the three corpses she left behind her. She just wanted to play one more time. The melody washed her of her sins and forgave all, caressing her fears away. It doesn't care that it will never be played by her again. It doesn't care that she is really sick. It doesn't care that she killed. It doesn't care that with each new stroke, another key is being damned with crimson, slipping down the sides slowly as the song came to an end; following the flow of her life. She just wanted to play one more time. The police would be here in a few minutes to see and hear tragic beauty. Her music will be playing on repeat by the piano. Just like in her dreams and fantasies; the perfect picture with the perfect music to go with it. They all accused her of being mentally unstable, but the piano never judged her. It would bathe her in warmth. Her husband would always lock her away, the children didn't understand, and the doctors wouldn't let her play. Here with the piano, nobody tries to stick her in the big white box, or take her blood, or make her sleep. As the song reached its end, she laid between the corpse of the man and the two children. A perfect complete family. There was only one thing left for the song. A huge bang for an ending. When the police got there, the piano was playing on its own, a melody of such beauty, a song of goodbye to the four corpses in it's audience.

As a musician, specifically a pianist, I am predisposed to like this piece. Despite my predisposition, I find your piece to be charming to much more than just those who are familiar with composing in the realm of sound.

The image you paint by juxtaposing the purity of white piano keys with misunderstood crimson streaks is brilliant. This alone is poignant enough to carry the piece, but another scene of disturbing beauty embellishes the final product. "A perfect complete family" ties the final picture masterfully, and is equally chilling and delightful to read.

There are some extraneous words that may not need to be there such as found in "washed her of her sins and forgave all" it is already implied that by being washed of her sins that she is "forgiven"; however, this is not a significant detractor.

Truly a chilling delight!
