Rabbit Stew

Rabbit Stew

A Poem by Don Lund

 Rabbit Stew

Flames flicker at the metal remnants.

Black smoke twists and turns like escaping snakes from every broken window.

Thousands of tiny glass shards nervously settle on the pavement.

Joe expels the smoldering ash from his lungs,

his shredded blue jeans cling to burnt flesh.

He stumbles away from the unbearable heat.

“Why me, why us, why now?”

“They hate us so much, and are we so different?”

Questions are answered with a thunderclap, another vehicle is engulfed by fire.

Heartless flames find new fuel, and renew their ritual.

Joe collapses in pain.

The gathered crowd looks beyond him as the inferno hypnotizes them.

“Why him, why us, why, now?” they silently chant.

“We must avenge this, we hate them, they are different than us.”

The vile is back in violence.

Wow. Very powerful imagery! It's so full of pain and makes me think of racist hatred.

Very well done. I can really see it.

I've been making up stories since I was very young. At first it was to entertain my younger brothers, cousins and friends. Later it was to entertain my sons and now I suppose, I may attempt to enter.. more..
