A Poem by AmeliaGerhardt

The beauty of a tree
and all of the wonders we
receive-

Shelter,
protection,
beautiful views,

and paper.

Each new day offers
a new, untouched sheet.

And what we get to do with that
piece of paper is
completely at our discretion

Shall we write a new poem?

Paint the skies?

Fold it into an airplane,
sit within the creases,
and fly away?

At the end of the day,
What we choose to do with our paper

May be hung on the refrigerator
for all to see and praise,

or, it may be crumbled,
tossed into the waste,
Forever hidden from the world.

If we so please, if we utilize each
sheet of paper, give it purpose, create
art upon its surface,

We create this beautiful
book. Full of wonderful memories,
mysteries, adventures.

Full of stories we are able to share with our friends
and our families- Things they're able to pass down
for years to come.

You are the author, illustrator, holder,
of your life.

Make it a best-seller.

I like the journey you took me on with this poem. Starting with beautiful trees and what they gift us with, especially the gift of paper and what we can do with it. Letting our creative side come out during our lifetime and leaving something of ourselves behind when we pass on. Yes, your final stanza, so true. Lovely read.

Thank you

Chris
