Sky High Def

Sky High Def

A Poem by Melanie Jane Boicourt Shanks
"

Painting a picture with words.................

"

The indigo sky was speckled with white flashes of twinkling lights.

They were numerous and looked too close to be stars

but that is what they were.

The moon looked twice its size and shone so clear.

I wanted to reach up and touch its brightness.

I wanted to jump right up there and give it a hug.

Tell the moon thank you so much for shining and lighting up the night sky.

Of all nights to be totally full,

it chose this night when I would be in another country.

My logical mind told me that

of course the sky isn't bigger

just because I am closer to the equator.

But my eyes saw differently.

Above the mysterious jungle horizon was a sight that I had never seen,

I saw constellations that I never knew existed.

And I haven't seen anything like it since.

The sky in high definition.

There was no smog,

or fog,

or highway lights to cloud my view.

I had a pure glimpse of the heavens.

It was unforgettable.
