Creature of FlameA Poem by Melissa Kester
My slumber interrupted
By a man in shining steel He invades on my comfort And demands that I heel To none do I bow For, I am might and strength I unfurl my neck and tail And reveal my true length The scent of fear rises From this little man of flesh His fragile skin, he thinks protected Behind his shiny, metal mesh A rumble in my throat Warning him to go Disobedient little human, He strikes his first blow A flash of his sword Strikes down upon my claw My rumble turns thunderous And bellows out from my maw He shrinks in his fear And still raises his shield Unintelligent little creature, For most would now yield I rise to full height And he cowers inside He scrambles away And I chase him outside The sun on my scales The warmth in my lungs He raises his shield As my fire erupts He hasn't a hope Of saving his own life For, it was he who began This ridiculous strife Now ash at my feet, His quest unfulfilled I know more will come, Brothers of his guild If only they knew My true reasons and desire It was not meant for them - My beautiful fire A sigh of despair A tear from my heart It is not my true wish To tear them apart So I stand up tall And let go of my cries I spread my wings wide And take to the skies As I soar through the clouds My molten heart pounds My scales glitter in sunlight And my fire breath sounds As day turns to night I am gifted with peace I return to my cavern And settle with ease Someday they will learn I am not to be tamed For, I am a Dragon - A creature of flame © 2017 Melissa Kester |
