A FINE AUTUMN DAY

A FINE AUTUMN DAY

A Poem by Mockingbird

they suck the life out
of the corpse-less dead
filling them with
lurid memorabilia
for the tourists
who walk among the tombstones
of this graveyard city.

from tragedy we gladly inherit
silver from the ole mint farm
to place on the mantel
of the patriotic.

ovine superstition
the poetry of numbers
suicide jacks and
jackson origami:
portents and prophesy
that feed the need to hate and rejoice.

grieving widows spew forth
tearful soliloquies clutching
their orphaned children's faces
on  the covers of magazines.

the voiceless mourners seek not
the velvet backdrop to act out their loss
as the rest enjoy the candlelit festivities
and commemorative stamps.

the looping footage proves
futile as a ghost
the real pain is forgotten
on a fine autumn day.

The press spin the news into threads of data streaming across the bottom of the screen stoically. They'll sell the damage for a good cost and use that money to spin some more. There is no shortage of sponsors ready to take our hearts and wring the sympathy from them, seal our eyes to the memorizing reporters, all the while tricking us into buying the latest and greatest from the commercials in between.

There are ghosts in every day life even if we can see them or cannot.

this is very unique...i felt that you were also expressing the melancholy aspects of a fine autumn day...in other words, you have shown the realities of living with the good and the bad in our everyday lives

This piece paints such a stark contrast in the viewpoints of people. I love how it delves into one topic only to leap to another. You paint the picture of a confused misled society in a wasteland of trivial knick knacks. What a country. Loved the poem though.
