Ocean of Sadness

Ocean of Sadness

A Poem by Petra Vlah

one day

I was breathing in the ocean

and so I tasted the salt

made out of tears

that washed away

the sacrificed joy of pyramids

into the Nile

that day

I heard the quiet cry

of the oppressed and lonely people

throwing their hopes

into the Ganges

and making it forever muddy

and then

I smelled the screams

of the majestic Amazon

where with no mercy

pawn brokers of human souls

shackled away the last remaining dream

in disperation

my lips have avidly touched

the banks of the beloved Mississippi

still tarnished

by innocent Indian blood

exhausted by sadness

I felt the gasp

of the broken Danube

forever exiled into the Delta

forgotten by men

as I was breathing in

the salty tears

so often

washed away by the rivers

into an ocean of sadness

that harvested

the sins of the world

I was finally

blessed and relieved

by the sweet bitterness

of the eternal

and

most holy Jordan

Great use of bodies of water to highlight human suffering internally and globally. The flow is carried easily in the format you've given the lines of each section. I'm sure it would have greater impact to the reader if they had been to these beautiful parts of the world in turmoil. Well done.

So very true.
You brought these mighty bodies of water together in harmony. I visualized each one and its majesty. All of my senses were enlightened by your flow of words as the currents swept me from one to another. Yes indeed these waters have seen bitterness, salty tears, sadness, frustration, death and rebirth. History has swept before them and still they stand strong, while man has turned to dust. Bravo my friend, very well written and expressed.
