Very delicate indeed, and sometimes we confuse the real thing for what can be called "false hope".

Sadly, people do it all the time - letting others believe that there is hope, when there is none. In relationships, a "straying" partner may, after multiple apologies, act very committed, and during such deception, the other party is receiving "false hope" that things will turn out well. Could also occur in other spheres of life.
