Lets take a walk.

Lets take a walk.

A Poem by Cory Barrett

Your name was different then,
as were the words i wrote.
I stumbled more then, and
loved using vocabulary, that
was not mine at all.  I scrambled
to spit shine my best pair
of work boots, lord knows I
couldn't write in patent leather.
I never have found the blue
suede shoes I always wanted,
but I'm no longer ashamed
of my footwear.  I concentrate
more on walking, it's easier
to look up and speak truthfully.

I asked the clerk in Family Dollar where the shoe polish aisle was and she just smiled. "You might find some against the wall in the back next to the dishwashing liquid", she said. It's almost a forgotten industry. Replaced by man maid uppers from Asia, or (god forbid) sneekers. "Spit shine", I assure the younger generation, was a needed gentlemans requirement for good grooming like wearing the right colored belt or applying English Leather on your chin. But this, least we forget, is a love poem; how wanting to love brings us closer to our truth. How looking clearly at someone is the first act of romance.
Beautifully written my friend...….dana

Wonderful story in the poem.
"I concentrate
more on walking, it's easier
to look up and speak truthfully."
I did like the above lines. Once, a great writer wrote. We will wear many types of shoes in a lifetime. Thank you Cory for sharing the amazing poetry.
