Rock, Paper, Scissors

Rock, Paper, Scissors

A Poem by Susan Beth Horvath

Rock
my heart
is
made of;
paper-like
the love
be-
tween us.
Your words cut -
like steel scissors -
love to shreds.
My heart
breaks
(scissors)
promises
you spoke.
Love
covers
wounds.

A fascinating allegory, reducing your love life to a children's game is certainly original in this context, yet the presentation I found both jilting and uncomfortable. Whilst I'm fully aware of the lack of rules in prose, this read more like a 'stream of consciousness' piece than a planned out penning. Toward the end giving the brackets around "(scissors)" forces a grammatical confusion; are we supposed to understand that your heart is broken as a result of promises spoken, or that it is your heart which breaks the promises of the speaker? I don't enjoy giving negative reviews but this feels like more of the 'sad work for sad votes' which both pervades and dominates this website. No denying your talent though.

WOW!!! I absolutely love this one! Brilliantly thought out and very original. I have yet to see anyone else use Rock, Paper, Scissors as a metaphor for a relationship. Bravo!
