Author's Note

The countdown refers to a local Irish custom of counting between flash of lightning and rumble of thunder. Counting is done each time a flash occurs. If the count is longer than the previous count then the storm is said to be moving away from the 'counter'.

love the theme ..language and simplicity .. what is it that Jesus/God said? we must be as children to enter heaven? ... i think it is not probably a conscous thing but that you start with the mention of the biggest possible imaginable and the form of your poem drops to a very small "..." which i can easily interpret as a path to the very same thing .. that this came to you in a flash ;) is very cool ... how far away was that storm my friend?

The storm was on top of us but we always say the storm 'is heralding good weather' and we did get a few days (which is a whole Irish Summer lol).

You know, Tony, this poem is beyond my understanding. For a start, I don't know what 'selfies' are. What is the relevance of the 'count up' at the end.? I am probably being a complete ignoramus, but , if you have time, I would love you o explain your poem to me.

Of course my friend. Self-portraits are ubiquitous on the Internet these days - usually by mobile phone camera (with flash in most cases it would appear, whether required or not lol). The countdown is a thing we do here which is supposed to tell how far away the electrical 'apex' (for want of a better word) of a storm is. It goes like this - theres the flash then we count in hundreds until an accompanying rumble of thunder is heard. If we reach 500 say, then the apex of the storm is 5 miles away. After each flash and countdown we can tell if the storm is moving towards our location or away. I'm pretty sure it's just a custom and has no scientific merit whatsoever.
A recent storm made me think that God was taking a self-portrait (a selfie) and this write came to be.

I am not sure if I was able to get the meaning but let me try. By flashes you meant those thunderstorms and lightning and thus implying that God takes selfies too as we use flashes on our phone. It's a metaphor right? But what about countdowns. The time gap between the sound of light travelling from space to earth?

The countdown seems to be causing confusion and I should now add a note in the A.N. section regarding it. It actually refers to a local custom of counting in between flash of lightning and associated rumble of thunder to deduce if the storm is approaching or travelling away from the observer (who is the one who counts).
