Refugee

Refugee

A Poem by Roderick Miller

A stranger in a strange land
A language I don't know
I hated to leave my home behind
But I knew that I must go
For the war at last had found me
As the bombs fell all too close

I am a refugee
So many of you hate me
Without even knowing who I am
All I want is to keep my family safe
The hopes and dreams of every man
And a place to live where I can be free
I am a refugee

For years I faced oppression
In a land besieged by war
While I cared not for the politics
Or the principals they were fighting for
For I am just a simple man
With a simple minded goal
My goal to raise my children right
While I myself grow old

I am a refugee
Its not what I had hoped to be
But like it or not its what I am
Starting all over wasn't part of the plan
In the end I felt that I had no choice
But to try to escape from the tyranny
So I ran to the land of the free
I am a refugee

So as you sit there in fear
Over what I might do
Just let me ask one question of you
What would you do if you were in my shoes
If I didn't try to give my children a better life
What kind of man would I be
That's why I'm a refugee

Nice work. Obviously culturally relevant in todays world of displacements.
