Why can't love be enough

Why can't love be enough

A Poem by Ms.Winchester

Remember how we ended up this way?
You once told me you loved me,
smiled when I returned your affection.
Only you suffered an affliction
that made you give away to because of mindless addiction.
Leaving me to ask why
left sitting there to cry
We fell in love in high school
You kissed me when we graduated on stage
Laughing as your ex called you a tool
Fast forward and your vows took up a page,
Once again we laughed as I called you handsome
You called me handsome too
And then some
But smoke clouded your lungs
Tar covering your insides
While my insurance covered nothing
Our kids gave you hugs
while death and everyone else decides
because of
'a thing'
we called love,
family,
and happiness
Now I sit here with your favourite kind of tea.
No longer in each other's protection.
Suffering the infliction
that came from how we lived.
Being told our life made us the bad guy.
All because we were gay...

Author's Note

Ms.Winchester
So here's the thing. I don't normally write poetry, nor do I know any good structures that make them great.
