Possession

Possession

A Poem by Brenda Woods
"

Of the rights to your own body and heart.

"
I am not yours to take.

Do not assume that I need you;
I am built from foundations of blood and bone,
strengthened by the steel of my heart,
and no single person can break me.

You may call me yours, just once---
not as a demand, but a question.
Cradle the words in your mouth;
they are fragile, not yours to keep.

If I call you mine---
treat those words as the acceptance of your request.

Do not assume you have my heart.
My heart is fortified with iron;
unlocked only by trust---
do not rush me.

You will call me yours,
and I will call you mine.
But do not think you own my body,
that if I flinch, you can touch me.

I am not yours to take.
But be patient, kind, understanding;
some day I may give you myself.
