Hero

Hero

A Poem by George Love
"

Who is a Hero?

"

Hero

Look now o man
And see if you can
From whence they hero came
And to whence he might go
Does one dare to play this role?
Not I, Not You, Not I?

So whence shall come our hero
And what feat shall we ask of him?
What ocean has he not crossed
Or mountain has he not climbed?
Who Dares to Play this Role?
Not you, Not I, Not You?

Past our hero is now
Was one to last or just to pass?
When all others shall faint
Satan himself shall taint
Now Dare to Play this Role?
Shall I, Not you, Shall we?

Teamed with metal and might
Shall one man face Death and laugh?
Set the sythe aside, shove it away and defeat the beast?
Slower than the pack shall we run?
Watch him in his last full run to play this role.
Now one, now many, now none?

Far from home now alien soil
Many fall to man now known
His hate of killing
Tis wrong said he
Yet in this role
See I, See you, See few.

Where shall the next hero live?
On silver screen, or on smaller scale?
Battle field or streets of blood?
Lives to save or money to earn
See you in this role?
Not I, Not you, Not I.

Amazing feats may many men do
Though this world has past the trials of old.
A hero defined in silver and gold
A critic decides who is now the one
To whence we shall call
Not one, but many, not one.

Muscles, sweat, blood and courage raw in form
Are seen each day from within and without.
Yet these should be and yet we deny
That from a hero yet to has to die.
Sacrifice to be made, shall it be?
Not I, Not I, Not I?

The fights to kill and evil spawned
Yet speak true word and yet be dawned
From within concrete and steel
May be entombed
As once free to speak
Are we, Am I, Are you?

Under One were founded this land of free
Yet try express this freedom be
And find within the bowels of man
The strength to face from force to force
And now we seek once more the hero
You are, I am, We shall be.

Ye who silence the voice of truth
May yet define more laws of books
Yet stand beside that once same law
For freedom for you was once for all
Now Heroes shall stand once again tall
It is I, It is You, It is WE.

I love the ending, its powerful and really brings together the meaning of the poem for the reader. The rhythm really gives the poem flavor and the use of swords and battles brings you back to the fight to be heroes and the tiring exhaustion at the end of everyday. Very well written and deep, I loved it :)
