The Primacy of Passion

The Primacy of Passion

A Poem by Audrey Howitt
"

passion through the years

"

The primacy of passion,

 vibrant in its push,

escapes through the sieve of midlife.

Sublimated into work-

Twisted into violence-

Distorted by the sagging skin of age.

The push becomes a nudge,

the nudge, a tap.

Until bittersweet,

the tap deepens its course

and fingers run through creases and crevices

created by life’s tumultuous trivial dramas

played out over a torrent of years.

Until,

the tap becomes a nudge,

the nudge, a push,

and passion ignites,

lit by the short fuse

of the years that remain.

It fills the mind, this running out of the clock. And each year the creature becomes ever more needful. Yes, that's it Audrey, exactly.

This was such a lovely isnight into the desire that continues into 'maturity'... the sieve that maybe allows only the strength of more refined feelings to continue their flow, when the fingers can still run through the crevices and creases, and the short fuse can still come alight and burn brightly... even exploding with pleasure. Thank you.

. your words flow in a fascinating way ... as if representing the passage of time ... with all the major milestones ... and they make me wonder about "the years that remain" ...

Love matures and grows. It changes shape but is constant. A lovely piece!

Another excellent piece on the theme....love it
The last two lines are stirring..make me shiver a little,
But end the poem like endings should--
making the reader continue in thought.

An image-rich and perceptive poem, artfully created.
Perhaps, though, the growing passion for passion is more of a female experience; the passion for life, however, is certainly shared by both sexes.
This mere personal observation is, of course, just that.
Little controversy, however, regarding the fact that this is typically excellent work.
