being your aftermath

being your aftermath

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

being your aftermath

heat seeking missile

your scent

finds its target

and i succumb

the damage catastrophic

in a perfect way

i fall like a long-legged building

too many stories high to count

and collapse gracefully into your arms

as the polluted memories scatter

you are my new insurance claim

and it is neither here nor there to me

whether i collect anything more

than another kiss or two

rebuilding is just an intrusion

because I’d rather be your happy rubble

than your disengaged exclusion…

Being someone's "happy rubble" isn't my idea of survival. Those old torn down, worn down, buildings always make me feel sad. Perhaps they were happy once...but when they are uninhabitable they become only a ghost town of broken dirty windows that shed no clear vision from within. Your writing is wonderful to read, as always.

Sometimes relationships are best left in the past. You continue to be kind of the metaphor.

That first stanza makes me think of how smelling a perfume might remind me of an ex that use to wear it.

Wow, those two final lines are so powerful. Speaks to me in volumes about the one sidedness of this. However, it is in the title. It's all there "Being your aftermath" The ending gave me a kick. Well done Jacob.

You clever poet you, using one theme to compliment and, in fact - enhance another! Don't know why, but this poem reminds me of an Escher drawing.. first this way, then another but with a fascinating and justified finish. That final couplet says it all, jacob!!

This is incredibly deep. I am a person who reads a piece and interprets it in a way that makes sense to me at the time. I may reread it in the future and feel a completely different way about it, that is why I enjoy poetry so much! If your poetry is meant to have one meaning and one interpretation, please let me know and I will discontinue my reviews. (Some people are very one-way street with their views on what they are trying to portray through their words).
I feel like this poem was taken directly out of my chest cavity because my heart felt as if it crumbled along with the building. Toxic relationships that hurt to hold on to, are always the ones that make us hold on a little too long; because subconsciously, we know that the pain from losing them forEVER, would be a painful blow that could crush us permanently. So sometimes it’s easier to hold on through the pain. Excellent poem.
