The Biggest Cross

The Biggest Cross

A Poem by Barbara Walker
"

Dedicated to my twin sister Sue

"
You would call,
a little peeved or upset,
but, oh, Sue,
I'd have you laughing
in a minute or two.

With a spoken phrase,
a funny look, a rolling of the eyes
and our sarcastic bent;
our laughter was no surprise
to the wise.

Soon, too soon,
you won't be able to call me
on the telephone,
you will no longer be here,
you will no longer be at home.

It never entered my mind
that I'd have to live without you.
I always thought-
I would die first, Sue.

When I think of you being gone,
I feel like a child, lost in a store,
scared, panicked, missing you
to my very core.

We've shared so much in life,
we've been with each other since birth;
with you, I've been so blessed
with merriment and mirth.

It feels like a major part of me,
very necessary to living and breathing,
is being forcibly wrenched from me
and I am grieving, oh, how I'm grieving.

I try to find the words
to describe my loss-
living without you
is like carrying the biggest cross.

"I feel like a child, lost in a store" , is such a great metaphor. I got lost in a huge department store when I was four and the memory of it still haunts me 54 years later.

A very sad poem.

A very sad poem my friend. I understand the emotion. We don't want to lose the people we have held close for a lifetime. Thank you for sharing the poem.

Hi Barbara,

This invokes tears, Dear Lady. Such an unimaginable loss. Your pain comes through loud and clear. My deepest condolences. The pain must have been (is) immeasurable.

All my best wishes!

Rick
