That Which We Call A Rose

That Which We Call A Rose

A Poem by Frieda P

Rose, an offering of love

a bud to blossom in all it's glory

instinctively bred to satiate

erect, climbing, trailing

awe and allure of strangulation

replete with thorns that prick

suffer the pain twined with pleasure

Your friend's artwork is exquisite!!
Oh how love is the rose, and so alluring, but as you mention has the thorn which may cause one pain. So, it is with life! Your words remind us of this, and how vulnerable we are even when it seems as if all is beautiful!!

a beautiful homage to life, love and beauty. how articulate and poetically you redefine the rose!

Roses and their duality have a special place inside of me. A beautiful poem that highlights the nature of the rose, as it does ourselves...

Intriguing ideas here; roses are showy and prickly, perhaps like declarations of love that aren't truely felt? I love your line 'awe and allure of strangulation', but wonder why they strangle? Do offerings of love suffocate us?

That's where my head was exactly Claire, thanks :)
That would be a thorny subject then? Great description of the different aspects of this complex flower. As others have said the artwork is lovely too.

No flower is more symbolic than the rose and yes, it does force upon us its contradictions in tradition and the reality of pain. Very well done.

My pleasure kind lady.
Awesome poem... it describes the nature of roses very well... I can't help thinking of the words... painful pleasure...

And tell your friend... he or she did an awesome job with the art...

Yes, all too often 'painful pleasure' it is....thanks.
A beautiful description of a rose. The rose had many meanings. I enjoyed your description. Thank you for the excellent poem.

LOL , just a little :) -- was a good distraction, had to get my mind off of things
You show a desire for feeling the complexities of love.
"awe and allure if strangulation
replete with thorns that prick"
You present a rose that to many may not seem a rose, but the fragrance is intoxicating. A subtle and passionate write. I like how you accomplished this.
