We Were Here

We wrote a message to

some future dwellers

that boldly stated

'we were here first!'

that spoke of names and ages

and years spent

in quiet occupation of this house.

We wrote a message

then concealed it ,

first with lining paper

then with floral print,

allowing it to loiter for a time,

awaiting discovery at the point

when floral prints

gave way to cubic tastes

and soapy water was employed once more,

to soak through layers

of paper, paste and years

to find our message painted on the wall.

I can see you doing this! What a surprise to those people. I have heard of carpenter's leaving things in walls to show they were there but this is great. I always loved seeing the growth charts of children etched into a families kitchen doorway...I suppose we all want someone to know we were here. I keep thinking that I am missing something else in this, but I don't want to think that hard right now and I like my take. :) Clever, whether you did it or not.

No you are not really missing anything, this was just a reflective piece on a family tradition on writing or painting all our names and ages on the wall before wallpapering. I guess i thought this is something that everyone does but perhaps I am wrong. I have always thought of it as a visual time-cpasule just lying dorment until it is time for a change.
