Love in the Days after Anubis

Love in the Days after Anubis

A Poem by Marie Anzalone

Because I loved you,

I sat up straight,

smoothed my skirt, and

surrendered to coffee spoons;

after realizing that the

Universe was testing me,

through you.

Because I love you,

I honor ancient contracts

I once signed in blood,

with a golden pen, on

papyrus in that hidden

place where hearts are

weighed against feathers-

things we forget in our

time of instant gratification.

Because I will love you,

I invite you still to dream,

with me, of the most

outrageous, reckless, perhaps

dangerous thing we could

imagine doing with and to

each other- and whatever that

task is, whatever the hell it

looks like, tastes like, feels like-

go and finally complete it.

If we take care of that part,

I can only imagine what

comes next- what beautiful

thing is taking flight to meet us-

as we rise, out the dark caves

of the transitional dead,

towards summits

and meadowlarks, and sunlight

that never grows cold.

The Phoenix stirs in this, and the ashes that link a couple might fertilise next seasons crop from here. Such promise. Such faith. It is a beautiful thing - if not always comfortable.
