The Journey is Everything

The Journey is Everything

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

The Journey is Everything

I hear an old soul with a voice full of achingly sweet and melodious tones.

It sings out into the murky void with unforgettable lyrics.

Is it because like me?

You did not take the wide,

Straight path that they had fore seen for us?

Instead, we meandered upon the treacherous path.

It was a twisted, narrow and rocky path of our own choosing.

Now with hindsight as we stand high on the piled up years of experience,

We see other paths we could have taken.

Would they have been easier or better?

I do not know?

I do know it is all this that has made us what we are today,

And we would not be the same person if we had taken a different path.

Now that's what I like to see; a poem that conveys a good message while still maintaining the imagery and emotional impact to be considered great. Often, I see poems with good messages, however, the didactic tone, as opposed to a more rhetorical one, ruins the entire poem. A poem can convey a good theme, but at the end of the day, it must still be poetic. This poem did not have the aforementioned problem. It had a great theme and was very well written. Great job.

(Just curious, did Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" influence this poem any?)

I believe we decide our own path. Our decisions lead us to where we support to be.

Above question is a useless one. After life had been lived. We must accept our ending. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

I did enjoy the poem and you are welcome.
Your poem reminds me of "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost (if I am not wrong about the poet's name). Life offers you various paths at every step and it is up to you to decide which path you would tread on. These choices are life-changing. We can always look back and say that had we done so and so, this wouldn't have happened- I hope I am able to make the point clear. This has been expressed in a good manner. Keep writing.
