Masquerade

Masquerade

A Poem by j.l. luna

Can't die today
No, guess I have to stay awake
They bribed me with promises I know they can't keep
So long as I wake up after I sleep
The living can lie
as long as it's white
But it's grey at best, and still makes you cry
This past January I collected my blood in a vase
and planted some roses
that never saw day
Life to life, death renews
Ashes, ashes, we've all fallen to you
You promised them you're getting well
your kerosene smile so carefully intact
Hoping nobody notices
and sets fire to your counterfeit laughs

Can't die yet
Too many nights I need to forget
Piece by piece I'll take them apart
like memories could be anything now
except art
The dead aren't secret keepers
sometimes louder than us
but their bodies turn to bone that turn to dust
Last year I liquified any hope of saving you
I couldn't love someone
that chose lies over truth
Hopes fall, seasons change
There is always going to be that blank page
You were wearing a black shirt and jeans
the last time we fought
And if that day was important
well, I think I forgot

You told them you're getting better
[is it true, is it true?]
because they're starting to believe you...
