NEVER FORGET!

I'll never forget the smell. It was awful!. The horrible black dust filled every wrinkle on your face. Your body longing for sleep,Something inside you wouldn't let you rest? Silently searching in your own tiny world. Occasionally tears would streak your face as you realized the Horror around you. NO! I'll never forget the smell...........

It was now September 14th or 15th? The exact date eludes me because time was lost in the wake of what we had been forced to witness. Just 4 days earlier I had been on the lake fishing with my son. Not a worry in the world. It's really difficult to remember what was said and done that day because the memories of the present seem to over power those of the past.

This rescue mission had now become a recovery mission. Hundreds picked through the eerie Pyle's of nothing. Searching for anything.......Or anyone...........Strangers became friends without ever uttering a word. Today and for many days to follow we had been witness to one another's deepest feelings.. I wasn't white. He wasn't Black. Today we all spoke the same language. We were family. We were Brothers... Searching.....Crawling through spaces you could barely squeeze your shoulders through.. Yet, Somehow?... Someway?. You made it..

You would become numb to your surroundings. The horror of death consumed your every thought. At exactly what point you became DE-humanized to what you saw and it became just a job?.. I just can't answer that......But you are always aware that the horrible things you are now collecting. Just a few days earlier were human beings... There is no way and no time to separate the pieces.. You come to the realization that only God can put this horrible puzzle back together.. So you just keep moving...Crawling slowly through what has now become your obsession. Your eyes adjust to the darkness. Rocks and twisted metal everywhere. You wipe the sweat from your brow only to find that the back of your glove is now covered in your own blood from the jagged pieces of metal that you found in the darkness by simply using your head. You hear a horn blow?.. Suddenly nothing but silence fills the air.. You sit there hoping?... Just maybe they found someone?.....Then the horn blows again saying you can continue working... To soon.......You must dry your tears and continue. Searching?.........For anything?..........Something?.......... Anyone?........The smell was horrible...........................NEVE R FORGET!........9-11-2001

Some of the bravest men on earth died that day.. Some of the bravest men on earth were Born that day... SOME ARE STILL FIGHTING... Because of that day...........kuntry

Awesome write!! The ending is perfect. Thanks for being brave enough to stand up and remind us of 911. Unfortunately people from the surrounding states of New York City were impacted the most by their immediate tragedy. Other parts of our country may find it more difficult to understand and support this war. When our nation stands divided, who benefits? Certainly not the heroes of war or their families.

awesome write, It puts you there for those of us that have forgotten. We should never forget! Amazing ending, I could almost hear the horn blow and the hope against hope that someone survived, and the lonliness and sadness that overwhelms you as you realize its just another body, dead, not alive. sad write, but great job :)
