What If?

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Readhead Girl Petting Gray Cat Gifs Images

What If?

What if dogs don’t whimper, but bite?
When I pull on its tale
I learn to treat them with kindness
Lucky this time, only a whimper and wail

What if cats don’t nuzzle, but scratch
When I squeeze them too tight
I learn to be gentle and kind
Whenever cats are in sight

What if a fish gets out of the bowl
When I put my hand inside
I learn it isn’t flopping for fun
It’s because of the water it’s denied

What if I put my hand in the jar?
To pull out what’s inside
I learn that my hand gets stuck
Each time I balled up my fist and tried

What if I climb high in a tree?
To see how high I can go
I learn that it seems much higher
When I’m up there looking down below

What if I hide my peas in my pocket?
My mommy can’t see them in there
I learn that mommy’s are magic
Mommy’s eyes can see everywhere
