As far as I can tell all writers are avid readers. Most writers write in the same genre that they read in, which makes sense because that is something that they are familiar with. But to become a better writer you should read outside of what you usually do. If you have a chapter that falls more into another genre than what the overall piece is about, then you should read a few books in that same genre.
Another thing to do when you read is pay attention to what the author does to make that book good or bad. Then you can figure out what you think is good and what isn’t so you know what you want to put into it.
Reading will help you subconsciously expand your vocabulary and work on sentence structure.
