How has living in New York effected your writing?

Not that it would necessarily, for excellent writers come from everywhere...but this is an interesting city, to say the least, that has been a breeding ground for experimental work throughout the century...

Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on that.

I think just by virtue of being born and raised and merely living in New York City does have an effect on writing in general. There is a certain sensibility here...for better or for worse....that has an effect on what people experience and how they sometimes experience it. Being that NYC is such a multi-cultural city is one reason. Also, with regard to "a certain sensibility", I think sometimes there is a cetain cynicism that may come through the writing. Not with everyone but I think it's definitely there at times. I think being from and living in NYC has effected my writing in a big way. There is so much going on around you it's like being blindsided with inspiration at times. But I also think there is a universal quality here, that you don't have to be living here or from here to relate to it...

I def finitely agree. There is so much raw material to work with in NYC all around you all the time. So many characters it's mind blowing. And there are few things more inspiring then standing on a roof 5pm looking at the world beneath you. Where else but NYC can one do that?

For me personally, NYC forced me to write. A series of unfortunate events (str8 f*#&d s*&^) happened to me in NYC which could only have happend in NYC made me write my first poem. After that, the rest is history.

Here, here. I'm in total agreement. Living in NYC effects everything dramatically. Living here packs a wallop of experiences that are so concentrated - one could go years in another setting and never get the vast humor, heartbreak and sleepless nights.

BTW.. new here and glad to hang (even though its electronically) with fellow nyc writers. I look forward to reading your work.

I'm new here too, and I'm really glad to meet everyone...surrounded by so much talent; it takes a little while to make one's way through people's work, I'm also looking forward to reading everyone's pieces.

Glad you joined!

How has living in New York effected your writing? - StMarks in the Bowery, New Years Day

Greetings all.

Have just discovered WritersCafe

A Melbourne-based Australian writer, thought I'd drop by to touch base. Have been very lucky to visit NYC on 2-occasions, & are now back home.

Your city has been a great inspiration for me.

Specifically, I'd like to include an account of one of my greatest writing highlights - the 2013 New years Day Poetry reading @ St.Marks.

If you have the time & inclination to read, I hope you like it.

Cheers, ic
