Earth Girl and the Song of the Midnight Moon

Earth Girl and the Song of the Midnight Moon

A Poem by One Hundred Fingers

The earth girl hides among the midnight trees

Waiting for the stars to erupt in song.

Always a lover of adventures and mysteries

- but oh! how the seconds keep dragging on.

"When will I hear this precious fabled tune?"

She questions the sky with pleading eyes.

"Please tell them I've been waiting, oh won't you, Mr. Moon?

Cannot the stars perceive my weary sighs?

Mr. Moon responded not, the silence ever thick.

And earth girl didn't quite know what to do.

Suddenly a breeze blew by, strong and quick,

Sending her shivers through and through.

"If only that breeze had lifted me to the stars,

I bet I would be dancing, lost in the sound.

Yet fate is unfailing and the distance is far

So instead I'll remain here on this hollow ground."

The midnight trees wept with earth girl

Stretching their branches out with hopes to console

But her sorrows somehow hardened her

To the hope once deep within her soul.

If only she had listened closer, perhaps she'd have heard,

The song of the midnight moon

But her desire to hear from the stars had blurred

Her senses from a more glorious tune.

Beautiful ryme and rythem. I love the imagry, and a hint of moral in this piece. All too ofter we look for something so far away from us and miss out on what life really is willing to offer. I bet the song of the Midnight moon would have been just as glorious as points of twinkling stars.

I especially love the last stanza. This is one of the poems I would like to memorize. It would save me lonely nights and make me smile on sunny days. Well done :)

Great poem. Very whimsical and almost childish, but there's still that serious air to it that makes it worth reading. You do some amazing things with imagery and metaphor here, and I really like how you describe everything. You paint a very distinct picture with this piece and it kept me reading the entire time. Very, very well done.
