What is Love?

What is Love?

A Poem by Abhishek Ram
"

This is a poem about love - not entirely a love shared by two people, but rather love as a general concept. This is talking about what it is and how important it is overall.

"

Love - a notion central to the history of mankind,

The cause of happiness, of sadness, of war, of peace,

And yet, something impossible to understand,

And yet, without it, our species would not be so different from beasts.

Love - a notion central to the life of mankind

The cause of birth, of death, of survival, of perish

But still, it causes mysterious things to happen,

But still, our species would not survive and nothing will be left to find.

Why is love so confusing? Why does love do what it does?

If solely to increase the population, why make it so tough?

Why can't it all just be chocolate and singing turtle doves?

Why does love have to be so rough?

It fulfills lives, it ruins lives,

It adds and subtracts lives,

It leaves happy lives, it leaves suicidal lives,

And yet, we cannot live without love.

The only difference is two letters,

But one is still dependent on the other,

It is central to a couple and of children from their mother,

The feeling that should make lives better,

But yet, it ruins lives, it kills lives, it terminates lives,

It may begin with giving roses and later pushing up daisies,

It may begin with feeding with a spoon to stabbing oneself with a knife,

And in the end, the universe loses people this kind of way daily,

Why does love give good and bad back?

Why must it always choose between two sides?

Why must love provide light and pitch black?

Why does it not choose one and decide to abide?

Perhaps love is yin-yang, the good in the evil, the evil in the good,

A neutral sentiment that authors always like to allude (to),

It has no side, its the Switzerland of sentiments?

It has no prejudice, will it attack the remorseless as well as the penitent?

Perhaps these answers are not to be looked for,

Perhaps there are answers that number two or more,

Perhaps there are answers that are too central to humanity's core,

Perhaps there are answers behind unopenable doors,

Doors that as humans, we cannot reach,

Doors that are not meant to be breached,

Barriers that protect the key to humanity,

A sight that, if seen, may cause calamity,

So live, we must, in these painful circumstances, Enduring a feeling many of us still have not felt,

Be it suffering from loneliness at night or during a slow dance,

Dealing with the painful emptiness we have been dealt.

I wish you luck dear reader, I wish you a bright future,

Perhaps you may find what we seek most,

A feeling that will close your emptiness like a suture,

A physical disappearance of the empty ghost,

So I bid thee goodbye as I keep going forward,

On blind hope that things may improve,

That I will feel inclined to wield my sword,

The sword of love, in verse and more, that I hope to cause hearts to move.

Au Revoir and Adieu.
