A Place in the Sand

A Place in the Sand

A Poem by Allen Smuckler
"

true friends

"

Two old gents with cameras in hands,

attached to tripods, made five feet.

they stopped along the shore so fine,

and watched pelicans dive on Marco Isle.

Those same old gents with cameras erect,

gazed and snapped a stately white heron.

Posed and strutted where water met sand,

on Marco Island, mid-winter twenty-ten.

Two old men on their destined paths,

no matter where it led, no matter how far.

Adrift in their thoughts and their friendship,

cameras in hand, attached to their tripods.

Two old gents disappeared behind dunes,

never to be seen or heard from again.

But two old ladies arrived, cameras in hand

ready to take their place in the sand.

This is a very warm touching poem. I enjoyed each chosen word. And I love the ending. It surprised me but it fit perfectly. Excellent writing!!

What a lovely ending, delightful! That third stanza could be a book in itself.

However, thinking a few seconds I see how time and trade repeats itself .. we're all the places we've ever been and all the people we're met or missed! You paint a sweet picture, or rather - take a sweet picture and yes, pelicans are worth watching.
