The Final Promise

The Final Promise

A Poem by Amitesh Rout

The Final Promise

Together with our hands clamped
I stood beside her,
The bed even was mourning
In grief of lonely hours.
The faults in our stars
struck us by surprise
Destiny played the devil
And cost us moments of despise.
Our hearts had slumped
in despair and disgust,
The rage soon dissolved
into love, impuissance and tears.
She held my palm,
stared with hopeless eyes
and reached for me
whispering her prayers.
A promise was all she asked
But a promise far too unfair.
I staggered and strayed
in agony and fear
yet gathered myself to gift
her last wish in tears.
As she lay past my head
Counting her last,
All she could blurt
was my name, a cough
And a promise to guide my heart.

This is heart wrenching!
Broke my heart to see such a loving pair separating.
So beautifully penned that even the air seemed to mourn her passing.
Last lines just touched me to the core, god bless her soul.
