To the World

To the World

A Poem by Andrew Rayne
"

When it is all there is left to say.

"

"Prove it to the world."

Her eyes brimmed with lucid tears,

scalding,

and heart wrenching as they plunged fear into my breast.

Excruciating to extract,

and terrifying as remembrance drove it deeper.

"I love you."

She cried and appealed to Heaven with prayers so agonizing,

that hope never seemed to leave her lips.

Trust was,

trust is: a frantic effort of principle.

"Announce it to the world then!"

Dark cloud formed over the sea in her eyes,

just as I turned to the sunset besetting the sky in scarlet.

Just as birds began their song.

Faithful to their partners,

birds were emblems of love.

Their chorus echoed against the hollow in my chest.

Into the empty space behind me.

"I did."
