these street are dirty

these street are dirty

A Poem by Naomi Montana Walsh
"

unfortunately true

"

The streets are dirty

I ignore that for the most part

They are littered with the lost ..

One of them is the mother of my own nephew

another a dear friend..

They are now as passing strangers on the streets

I knew one to be kind and the other rather evil and yet their fates the same.

I know them , but we pass on these dirty streets and do not greet.

A few nights ago , a shot rings out in the distance a man screams in pain

Helicopter spotlight break the night sky.

A new neighbor moves in ..

Three times he is robbed his car is stolen,

The next day, I witness, one young man crawling out his window..

I call the cops.. they say , they checked the guy out and there is nothing really to arrest him for..

Two nights later he is there back at the window.

I hate to leave my house unguarded, these streets are dirty..

Today, I am cleaning my pool in my own back yard, when a man suddenly jumps the fence .

He sees me and freezes, my big dog Sally runs at him he jumps over into the neighbors yard.

My Husband is away on business, my son left with friends..

My 4 dogs, bark and growl and I can not sleep, because these streets are dirty.

When Ghandi was asked what he thought of Western civilization,
he answered," It would be nice."
I lived in the East Village slums in the 70's and 80's.
Gunshots were weekly and buildings burning daily.
I've stepped over more than one dead body to get to
where I wanted to be with little emotion.
And left one or two lifeless to save my own,
again with little emotion. I never really checked.
Theses days are odd and disastrous,

I really love your poem! It's rather frightening because 'the streets are dirty' and that makes them dangerous, and the danger can show up at any time.

Quite an impressive write!

I like this one .. it is so true and sad that it is .. i like the way you repeat 'the streets are dirty'
and who can sleep? I miss my childhood! The streets were not quite as dirty then .. this is powerful
and true to life.
