Serious Personality

Serious Personality

A Poem by April Child

In the mirror I see

something is different

with shock I realise

I have a wrinkle

I raise my eyebrow

it’s accentuated

I lower my eyebrow

it stays, an echo

I knew it would happen

the day would come

my face would say

welcome to middle age

Over time we

make friends and

I admire my friend

from every angle

Eventually it

seems more like

a badge of honour

to wear with pride

My battle scar

I trace that line

that says I fought

and I survived

This face now shows

the life I lived

the laughs I laughed

the tears I cried

More importantly

I now need to

back this old face up

with some serious personality

Oh this one made me smile.. Yes middle age does bring those things we already know will occur but how shocking it is when that day arrives. This is one of those fun poems that make me smile because it is oh so very true!

Erik Homburger Erikson (June 15, 1902 May 12, 1994) was a German developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst known for his theory on social development of human beings, and for coining the phrase identity crisis. He stated, that in life's seventh stage, middle adulthood, people struggle to find new meaning and purpose to their lives; their questioning, he believed, could lead to what we now call a midlife crisis.

However, I know old, young people and many more young, old people who contradict this theory. They also say ,the older the wine, the better the taste, no matter what the bottle looks like!

A wonderfully creative and humorous composition. Good read!

Lines I also believe are a mark of honor... those who spend all their money and energy on trying to look young are fooling themselves and living in the past instead of embracing the present and welcoming the future.. great write.

'Over the time we make friends' is a wonderfully whimsical line in this poem which is literally reflective. There's wisdom in the piece from top to bottom and the last line adds character to the humour. The poem belies the last verse as the writer clearly has bags of personality already to come up with such a thoughful piece, which shows as much acceptance as ruefulness at the march of time.

this is terrific fun :)
you got something here
i like that its so simple and stays with itself
and doesn't wander aimlessly for the sake of words
too many people like words too much
i like sometimes, the absence of words
if i can use one word in the place of ten, I do ..
that's why i lke this so much :)

i love this poem. such an original take on a rite of passage. your style and subtle humor led to a perfect ending... this is a thoughtful and reflective piece that i think we can all relate to.

Oh - this is good - I resemble this... decided I liked my eye corner lines but the one on the forehead...not so sure.... laughed at your note that you were having a two cake bad day.... I ate so many Whoppers that I think I sound like I am bowling when I move... oh... Thanks for the nice laugh at my "interesting" face....
