Breakfast with a Robin

Breakfast with a Robin

A Poem by April Child

I hear  your words

but they don’t

matter to me.

My dad is dying

and the fact that

you think I am

interested in

whether drugs

should be legalized

just annoys me.

This morning I

went to the shop,

in my pajama’s,

to buy a fresh loaf.

Made toast, coffee,

put some bread

out for the

birds and delighted

in sharing breakfast

with a robin redbreast

and, just for a moment,

I smiled and forgot.

My dad is dying.

You have a magic touch using the most simple words, in a very sensative special way, that hit me directly into my heart, I just love your style, its what I am looking for , here.... once a great poet said, if you have something to say, just say it simple....and you did.... you expressed your pain, to see your dad dying, you expressed you little moments, when you try to forget, finding a beautiful bird, to share some smiles with, just not to think about him... and you express why the idea, that your man is dealing with other isses , make you mad, when you all concetrate , in your dad ... you are such a wonderful poet,

Hope you are better, now... Yossi

A great piece. If only for a simple pleasure to try and forget. Facing a life changing event is the hardest trial we sometimes have to go through when a parent is involved. Well written.

I loved how you pointed out the beauty of a simple, pure moment and how it can recharge the soul (even if slightly). The sadness you conveyed about your dying father was tangible. I also loved the rejection of the intellectual discussion with a friend for the simple breakfast with nature. Very good stuff

Ach, bitter-sweet. The mind and eye dart, from the sadness of your father's illness, the mundane converstaion, and the focus on the tiny bird...you find peace in a tiny bit of life hopping around outside your own life, but in the same instant can't forget what you have found peace from. The poem captures how all your thoughts are pulled back to the one big thought. Millions will know this moment or one like it.

What a lovely poem and what a sad reality. It is comforting to do basic and easy things while something so out of our control is happening - a way to see that life goes on all around us. Let this little winged messenger who was an inspiration also show you that you are not alone and you can be dropped in on by little angels of all kinds.

Take care my friend.

Really lovely and poignant, i like the idea of how animals can be so much more comforting than humans sometimes.

a poignant piece of poeticprose. I hope it is poetic licence and not reality. You highlight how some simple pleasure can overcome sadness if only briefly Excellent piece of work
