Catch Me

Catch Me

A Poem by ArmourOfGod

Do you remember that game we used to play as kids? The trust one where you fall backwards and someone's supposed to catch you. It seems silly now but it was such an innocent faith. Children are so blindly trusting, so naive to the reality of the real world. At our worst, we always expected someone to be there to catch us.

But as you grow up,
the ugly truth is revealed.

Often those who we’ve
designated as our safety
nets become the force
pushing us into free fall.

They say they love you. Until the darkness starts bleeding through. You’re falling again and the nets are nowhere to be found. Only empty words spat from the sharp tongues of the ones you thought you loved.

‘Get over it.’
‘Stop being so selfish.’
'What’s wrong with you?’

So each time you fall harder and further. The jagged edges of your broken heart tearing you open from the inside out. But no one wants to hear about your pain.

So you stop talking about it.
You put on a cheery smile
and tell them you’re fine.

Relieved of having to fix you, they accept your reassurances without a second thought. You try to believe it yourself but
you can’t ignore the
chaos that remains.

This world may have
SILENCED the VIOLENCE
within, but it has not ceased.
