OFFICE BLUES

A Story by Titilayo Sarah Eguridu

Lately, the sheer predictability of my job and everyone in my life is beginning to grate on my nerves.
I shudder at the thought of having one more predictable day...then you walked in.
You with the face of a fallen angel
Looking wickedly attractive and forbidden as sin in a well tailored grey suit.
My heart starts to do a free fall ...just like the waters of Niagara Falls.
Well! I mumble to my self, there’s nothing predictable about this hour.

In a few months ,my heart was in your palms.
I hung unto every word you uttered...like my life depended on it.
Your smile was my high
Like an addict, my day was sour without the tangy scent of your perfume.
You displayed streaks of rare intellect and resourcefulness that made me proud.
Life had never been better.

...until you walked into my office yelling
“Why are you so unimaginative, slothful, and unproductive?
You threw my project file at me and stomped out
You suddenly became a vortex of endless torture
The firestorm of office gossip was unrelenting and ruthless
I anesthetized myself by having endless coffee breaks
Yet I had no respite
Sighing, I got up and there you were striding towards me
Memacing,and purposefully
“You are fired”
My mind’s hard drive starts to crash
...”it’s truly over”
