Divine Message

Divine Message

A Poem by Babbette Francis
"

A Voice for Neda Agha Soltan For a contest.

"

Chills cover me as I watch her spirit escape her shell.
Her cold stare, a message that I should turn away, for what was to come next was death.
Yet, I watched in disbelief as her soul seeped away.
I heard the screams of terror from others, her eyes still on me.
I heard her soul speaking, telling me I should not be there.
I heard it spoken through the blood that drained from her lifeless body.
But it was her eyes that spoke most profoundly,
with a promise that I would
forever wear this coat of chills
that I have willing taken from her haunting departure.

Author's Note

Babbette Francis
Neda, a participant during the 2009 Iranian election protests, was gunned down by a snipers on 6-20-09. Her death was caught on camera and aired on the internet. Her name quickly became a symbol of pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime in the world. Coincidentally Neda means voice, calling, Divine message. Neda, the name that speaks for itself has now become, The Voice of Iran.

I saw the clip of her death and will never forget the moment I watched the life leave her body. It was in her stare. Im haunted by what I've witnessed.

Oh wow you did this piece very much justice. It is amazingthe world we live in today. What has become ok to watch I think that disturbs me more. I felt cold watching it as a young girls life is so callously taken from her. I honestly don't know how to express the way I exactly feel other than to say this was a beautiful piece and you are extremely talented in my opinion to pull this write off. Excellent job.

This was so haunting a real chiller yet allowing us to feel that love is so profound that in death we are just embarking on a new experience and that we must not fear leaving our shell for spiritual re-union will occur from the death and tragic ashes of our past life.
There are some whom i wish never to see again after this world which darken my day.

Like you, I cannot get her sensless death out of my mind. What you have said in your poem is exactly what the haunting video portrays.

You describe your poem as a voice for Neda, but did you know that the name 'Neda' means 'Voice' or 'Call' in Farsi? I hope that more of us will speak up for her and call for her government to stop the violence.

Watching anyone pass away is a difficult thing to do. I admire your bravery to witness such an ordeal. As I read each line I felt as if I was there in that moment. You did an exellent job. I know that divine woman is proud of you

I watch the video too. It makes me feel so small and helpless. Your poem is beautiful, Babbette. To say her death wasn't in vain is not enough, she deserves more. This is a wonderful tribute to her. I agree with Cowboy, "You are a true poet with a big heart."

Oh my it is never easy to actually watch someone pass on, especially in such a violent manner... your poem itself was spine chilling but I know it can come close to what you saw. Very powerfully haunting. You are a true poet with a big heart.
